Rollo M Noble

Seaman 2nd Class, U.S. Naval Reserve Force. Died of pneumonia October 16, 1918, aboard hospital ship USS Mercy at Yorktown, Virginia. Age 22.

Listed under LeRoy on County List 4.

Actual home town: York (Livingston County) and Covington (Wyoming County)

Burial: Pleasant Valley Cemetery, York, Livingston County, New York

Despite his listing under LeRoy on Genesee County List 4, Rollo McDonald Noble is more accurately described as both a Wyoming County and Livingston County sailor.

According to his enlistment papers and other documents in his Official Military Personnel File, Noble was born on October 5, 1896, in York (Livingston County), New York. The 1900 US Census shows Rollo at age 3 living in York with his parents, Walter R and Margaret Noble, and three sisters. The 1910 US Census shows 13-year-old Rollo and his family in Covington (Wyoming County), while the 1915 NY Census shows Rollo at age 18 with his family back in York. By 1918, the family apparently was again living in Covington. Newspaper items from the time, including the above-cited Perry Herald article announcing Seaman Noble’s death, place the family in Peoria, a hamlet of Covington.

Rollo Noble enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force on June 3, 1918, and on July 12 was assigned to USS Alabama, a battleship used during the war as a recruit training ship. Significantly, the home address given on Noble’s enlistment papers is “Pavilion, Wyoming County, New York,” and the mailing address for his father is listed as “RFD 34, Wyoming County, Pavilion.” This suggests that, as was the case with Herbert J Clark (see Clark listing in this section), the reason for the confusion over Noble’s home town and home county designation was that, at the time he enlisted, although the family was living in Wyoming County, their mailing address was Pavilion, in Genesee County.

This also explains why Rollo Noble was listed under LeRoy on County List 4. There was no Pavilion category on that list; all Pavilion residents seem to have been arbitrarily placed under LeRoy.

Seaman Rollo M Noble is listed under Wyoming County in the New York Roll of Honor and in List of Names of the Soldiers, Sailors and Marines of Wyoming County, N.Y. His remains are interred in Livingston County, in York’s Pleasant Valley Cemetery. For many years an American Legion Post in Livingston County was named after him.
