“Batavia’s Honor Roll” Series

Published February 1, 1919 Batavia Times (p8 c2); March 1, 1919 Batavia Times (p1 c3-5); June 2, 1932 Batavia Times (p1 c2) – 32 NAMES

In addition to Lists 1 through 4, the four primary countywide honor rolls on which this project was based, three published honor rolls specific only to Batavia (but therefore also listing Genesee County individuals) were taken into consideration. All three lists included the same number of names, but each varied slightly.

The first, titled “Batavia’s Honor Roll,” appeared periodically (weekly, in most cases) in the Batavia Times beginning with a list of three names in the July 27, 1918 issue and ending with 30 names in the February 1, 1919 issue (p8 c2). The second published roll, a front-page illustrated feature titled “Batavia’s Honor Roll,” appeared in the March 1, 1919 issue of the Batavia Times. The third, published in the June 2, 1932 Batavia Times, listed 30 names on a memorial plaque placed on a boulder in Williams Park. Two more names were added to the plaque at a later date, bringing the total of unduplicated names among the three rolls to 32.

Because of the lists’ similarity, they are considered one and the same, under the abbreviation “BHR,” for the purposes of this project.
